Why publish with SUP?

  • Global reach

Books published with SUP are freely available to all without restrictions or paywalls, extending the reach of research to a global and more diverse audience.

  • Community-led

SUP is managed by the participating libraries. The Press aims to be responsive to the needs of the academic community in Scotland that it serves.

  • Not-for-profit

SUP operates on a not-for- profit basis, investing any surpluses back into the Press for the benefit of all partners.

  • Peer review

All books go through a rigorous peer review process, managed by an Editorial Board of academics from across participating institutions. SUP offers a supportive peer review experience, and reviewers are paid an honorarium for their time.

  • Retain copyright

Authors retain the copyright to their work, and books are published with Creative Commons licenses.

  • Low production charges

SUP is supported by subscriptions and in-kind contributions from member institutions which allows the Press to deliver low production charges in comparison to commercial publishers, saving funders and institutions money.

  • Print and digital formats

SUP books are available in both print and digital formats. Books are printed on-demand so will not go out of print. Digital books are free to download in both PDF and EPUB formats, complying with accessibility regulations. The digital book is preserved for the future though our partnership with the CLOCKSS archive.

  • Full publishing service

SUP offers the full publishing experience for authors. All books are designed, copyedited, typeset and proofread to a professional standard. A marketing plan is developed for each book. Authors are supported all the way through the process.
